When people talk about diabetes, they are usually referring to Type 2 diabetes.
But in fact, diabetes comes in several forms.
Let’s take a closer look at how diabetes is classified and the different types that exist.
● What is Diabetes?
- A group of symptoms and signs caused by metabolic abnormalities in glucose metabolism.
- The hallmark is hyperglycemia (but note: hyperglycemia is a result, not a cause).
● Proper classification by cause
- Helps enable personalized diabetes care.
● Most widely used global classification of diabetes
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Specific types due to other causes (e.g., monogenic diabetes syndromes, diseases of the exocrine pancreas)
- Gestational Diabetes
