On July 5, 2021, an interview with Director Lee Je-won of BM K-Clinic was published in Akomnews (Korean Medicine News).
The interview, titled 'One Year as a YouTuber... Growing and Developing Myself,' explores the reasons behind the 'HF Camp' and its YouTube Live broadcast, as well as Director Lee's unique philosophy of viewing the 'Korean Medicine Physician' as a 'scientist'.
We are excited to share the key points of the interview.
HF Camp': Active Intervention for Lifestyle Diseases
As a specialist in Internal Medicine, Director Lee emphasized the importance of properly managing 'lifestyle diseases'.
During his hospital residency, he realized the limitations of managing internal diseases with medication or procedures alone, concluding that "more active and comprehensive intervention by experts" was necessary.
Based on this philosophy, the 'HF Camp' was launched in May 2019.
The 'HF Camp' is an open chat room where medical staff and patients interact. Patients certify their daily life patterns—such as diet, wake-up times, and exercise—with photos. The director then personally organizes this data into tables, evaluates it, and provides daily feedback.
'HF Camp Live Review': An Efficient Means of Communication
As the number of patient certification photos grew, the time required to organize and provide feedback increased.
To use this valuable time more efficiently, the idea of broadcasting the review process live was born. This led to the start of the private YouTube broadcast, 'HF Camp Live Review'.
This broadcast serves as a 'premium' communication channel for active engagement with HF Camp members.
Korean Medicine Physicians: A 'Scientist Who Teaches Health'
In the interview, Director Lee states his desire to correct misunderstandings about Korean Medicine physicians.
Korean Medicine physician is a "scientist and medical scholar" who studies not only traditional Korean medical knowledge but also modern scientific fields like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and radiology.
His YouTube content also strives to "easily explain human life activities from the perspective of a scientist".
Furthermore, he emphasizes that like the etymology of the word 'Doctor', a Korean Medicine Doctor is not just a practitioner but also has a duty of 'public health guidance' —to "bestow teachings for health".
An Era of Change: 'Ignoramus (We Do Not Know)'
Director Lee quotes the word 'Ignoramus' (we do not know) from Yuval Harari's 'Sapiens,' reminding us that modern science began with the assumption that "we do not know everything".
He states that in this era of rapid change, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, if we approach challenges with a flexible mindset, assuming "we do not know," we can find diverse and excellent ways to fulfill our duties as medical professionals.
